European Route of Industrial Heritage

The 4th of July, 2007, was a great date to launch “The Industrious East” with a bang from the Rocket Troop of the 95th Rifles at Royal Gunpowder Mills. “The Industrious East” is a network of industrial heritage sites that are part of the European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH) in the East of England.

Epping Forest District Council is proud that Royal Gunpowder Mills in Waltham Abbey has been chosen as the anchor point on a new regional tourism route. The new route - The Industrious East - celebrates the East of England’s industrial heritage and also forms part of the wider European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH).

Royal Gunpowder Mills, Waltham Abbey has been designated as the ERIH anchor point for The Industrious East route in recognition of its prominence as a gateway to the region, its historical significance and the up-to-date facilities it offers to visitors. Involved in the production and development of explosives for more than 300 years, today Royal Gunpowder Mills, Waltham Abbey shares this story with visitors through interactive exhibitions and re-enactments, all set in 170 acres of natural parkland and historic buildings.

The Industrious East is part of the European Route of Industrial Heritage, a network of sites across Germany, the Netherlands and the UK featuring the development of railways, engineering, power, explosives, agriculture/food, textiles/fashion.
