The Hummingbirds
The Hummingbirds present 1930s and 1940s nostalgia with close harmony vocals, Andrews Sisters Style.
Cathy Edkins, Jenny Ewington and Jill Luff are all trained singers and met through the ‘Cappella Singers’.
The Hummingbirds began in 2000, when Jenny penned some arrangements in the style of the Andrews Sisters and asked Cathy and Jill if they fancied having some fun trying these out. They found that not only did they have fun but that their voices blended well together. So today they perform many standards as a group or as solo numbers from that golden era of music and the silver screen.

Many visitors will be aware of the storming of the Merville Battery by the 9th Battalion, The Parachute Regiment. This famous battle, fought in the early hours of 6th June 1944 - D Day, was won by the guts and determination of Lt Col Otway’s gallant few.
The Battalion, now numbering only 170 all ranks, were kept in the line by necessity. On 10th June the Battalion’s "C" Coy were detailed to seize and hold the Chateau St Come, in the woods before Breville, a strongly defended German HQ. Truly, they were required to “hold until relieved”. The mission was achieved.
The enemy launched numerous counter-attacks during the following three days, with mortar and artillery support, but the Battalion’s defence was so strong that a German commander captured during the battle reported that his unit had been wiped out. They were relieved on the 13th.
The re-enactment battle, using men, vehicles, blank ammunition and pyrotechnics, at Royal Gunpowder Mills VE Commemoration 2008 seeks not to glorify war, but to do honour to all ranks of the 9th Battalion, and their supporting arms, by a demonstrating only a little of what they were forced to endure at St Come in June 1944.
