Peggy - Steam Traction Engine
Peggy was built in 1904 to an 1899 Victorian design, at Clayton & Shuttleworth's Stamp End Works, Lincoln. Works number 36336. She was first registered in 1921 and allocated the registration mark BP 5821. Designed by William Fletcher, the doyen of Victorian and Edwardian steam traction engine design, she is a 7 nominal horse powered general purpose steam traction engine. Peggy could be used for haulage, thrashing, wood sawing and a host of other agricultural tasks. She also has a winch.
Peggy appeared at the Norfolk Show, at East Dereham in June 1904.On 25th August 1904 she was delivered to John Sparks (Engineers) of Yapton, Sussex. In 1913, Peggy was sold to Edward Hobgen, Shripney, Sussex. In 1928, she passed to Henry Hobden, Isfield, East Sussex where she continued to work on farms. Peggy worked on farms for forty-five years from 1904 to 1949.
It is with grateful thanks to the late Michael Pink D.F,C., that Peggy entered into preservation in 1950. Michael did much to maintain her fine engineering prowess. Dr, Raymond Rowe acquired Peggy in April 2002, He took her back Clayton & Shuttleworth's Stamp End Works, to meet the Mayor of Lincoln and celebrate her centenary. Peggy took part in the National Traction Engine Trust's 50th Anniversary 18 mile Road Run and, on 25th August 2004, she was delivered to the old John Sparks (Engineers) building (now the Co-op) at Yapton, Sussex - 100 years to the day!
