For over 300 years the Royal Gunpowder Mills was cut off from its surroundings by its river boundaries and the secrecy of its work. As the government's use of the site reduced so nature took over creating a hidden world, unique landscape and thriving ecology.
Visitors are be able to explore a large section of this unique world from a network of boardwalks, bridges and footpaths.
Home to a huge variety of plants, birds and animals, two thirds of the site has been designated SSSI, a Site of Special Scientific Interest. It offers the largest colony of Herons in Essex in addition to Muntjac deer, bats and otters.
