We're OPEN EVERY DAY during the summer holidays with lots of family fun taking place in the Mad Lab!
SUMMER HOLIDAYS AT THE SECRET ISLAND - ROYAL GUNPOWDER MILLS
Get set for a spectacular schedule of summer fun and games at the awe-inspiring Secret Island-Royal Gunpowder Mills. Take the kids to test their senses at Professor Nitrate’s crazy Mad Lab where an amazing array of exhibits will excite, amuse and enlighten them all day long.
This summer, join a rich and long heritage of scientific experimentation where gizmos, gadgets and all kinds of gunpowder-gubbins have been tried and tested for all the latest discoveries and an awesome slice of action.
Let the lab-rats show you around some intriguing contraptions and mysterious machines especially designed to test your senses and trick your mind.
From sight to sound and smell to touch, the Mad Lab’s sensational series of experiments, teasers and tests will leave you utterly enthralled – and in some cases – magnificently mystified – as your wits are placed under the microscope.
Featuring 16 stand-alone ‘Test Your Senses’ exhibits, the Mad Lab presents a hands-on and dynamic host of interactive experiments such as the reaction tester that assesses your response to lights and sound.
Identify colour blindness by looking for hidden numbers on a colour vision test and see how well you mange with your eyes closed during the touch test tasks. Find out how difficult it is to put a key in a lock, put a plug in a socket or dial your home phone number.
Discover what you can see to the side when you are looking straight ahead with the peripheral vision exhibit and then listen to a radio through tubes of different lengths to find out how accurate your hearing is.
From ‘feely boxes’ where you must identify the mystery objects and the smell table where you must try to sniff out the correct scents to learning about your hearing range, balance levels and memory; expect a variety of thrilling tests for some unexpected self-discovery for all ages that will stir the senses and tickle the ribs to boot!
In addition to the Mad Lab, Professor Nitrate’s science shows and permanent family activities on the test range we will also be introducing a programme of creative activities. Held every Thursday throughout the summer holidays, the programme will be as follows:
- Thursday 26th July - Hat and mask making - become a woodland animal or king of the jungle.
- Thursday 2nd August - Clay model making - make your own piece of treasure to take home.
- Thursday 9th August - T-shirt printing - for just £3.50 print your own t-shirt to take home.
- Thursday 16th August - Finger painting and drawing - test your drawing skills and express your creativity with paint. (All paints used are washable but to be sure we advise you wear clothes you don't mind getting a bit of paint on. )
- Thursday 23rd August - Astronaut suits - get into character to launch your rocket.
- Thursday 30th August - Collage club - from bunting to big art join us on our final day of the creative programme.
