July must be the month of good luck, with new plant acquisitions and the welcome addition of five more volunteers. Lee Savill and Andy Smith joined us in June, with John Smith, Kevin, and Brian making their debut on Saturday July 8, the day we achieved our largest single track lay to date, 72 feet of Shoeburyness rail on concrete sleepers.
This feat would have not been possible without the 360 degree Mini Excavator on loan courtesy of BICOL Servicing Company Ltd. to whom we are most grateful. Sleepers were placed just where required with this super piece of kit and the expertise of Lee’s driving.
BREAKING NEWS - AS OF SATURDAY 15 JULY TRACK LAYING HAS JUST REACHED THE HALFWAY POINT ON THE ROUTE SOUTH.
Plant acquisitions since the last Newsletter have been donated by a nearby Garden Centre in Chingford, and both are in good working order. The Powerfab 125 Mini Excavator should eliminate the tedious task of hand loading ballast onto the works wagon. The other item, a ride on Westwood lawn mower, will be of great help keeping the vegetation at the railway sidings under control and the permanent way clear of nettles.
The last eight tonnes of rail delivered by Robinson Transport of Sandy, brought the opportunity of acquiring two redundant Portakabins from their works yard in Bedfordshire, with these we will provide a more functional mess-room / kitchen and office, a pressing need with our volunteer group numbers increasing.
AUGUST 5 SAW OUR BEST RECORD TO DATE, WITH 108 FEET OF TRACK LAID IN ONE DAY AND MORE MATERIAL COLLECTED FROM THE SOUTHERN STOCKPILE IN PREPARATION FOR THE FOLLOWING WEEKEND.
The task ahead is a real challenge, but as usual the will and energy of the Railway Group will be undaunted, however the time is right to ask all interested railway enthusiasts out there - ARE YOU INTERESTED IN BECOMING A VOLUNTEER? We normally work Wednesdays, Thursdays & Saturdays. Please come and visit the Mills Industrial Railway and see what we have achieved to date, visit our website links to the narrow gauge railway, or call 0797 9820605.
