Steam and Country Show - 15th & 16th May
The nostalgia of steam and country life

Hot on last years successful Steam Fair, the nostalgia of steam returns to the Royal Gunpowder Mills in Essex. The event celebrates the 154th anniversary of the introduction of steam power to drive the powder incorporating mills in 1856. This event will bring together many Full Size and Scaled steam engines, crafts, country related activities, children’s activities, and trade stalls. Come and see a Redtail Falconry display and Bob Hogg's Sheepdogs. Make sure you also explore the whole site to see our regular exhibits.

Bob Hogg Sheepdogs

For many years Bob Hogg and his sheepdogs have travelled throughout the Country appearing at many major shows. This will be the first time that they will appear at the Royal Gunpowder Mills. During Bob's display he will explain how the dogs are trained, then with the help of some of our younger visitors he will demonstrate the herding of Ducks and his new addition Paxo the chicken! This will not be your basic sheepdog display, the entertainment value that Bob provides is something you will not want to miss. Bob Hoggs Sheepdogs Website

Bernese Carter Display

Bernese Carting Dog

Bernese Carting Dog

In their native Switzerland, Bernese were general purpose farm dogs, often used for herding the cattle between the farms and the high alpine pastures. One of the main things that they were used for however, was draught work, pulling their small carts laden with produce, between the farms and the dairies. Many owners of Bernese in the UK have endeavoured to keep these draughting skills alive in the breed, both in competition and by giving displays of carting.
