Spectacular Family Fun & Special Events at the Royal Gunpowder Mills

Our heady host of spectacular events offers an exciting array of family fun and entertainment throughout 2013 at the Royal Gunpowder Mills’ Secret Island.

We are Open Every Weekend from 29 March to 29 September 2013

We are also Open Every Day during all School Holidays (except winter break).

Opening Hours: 10am - 5pm (Last Entry 3.00pm)

Spy Academy - Half Term (25 May - 2 June)

Break codes, go undercover, foil espionage and reveal double-agents; there’ll be missions to complete all week. Professor Nitrate’s doing some highly hush-hush work, and you can help keep his secrets secre

Wild West Weekend (26 - 27 May)

Great family entertainment with gun spinning, fast draw, rope tricks, bullwhip displays, comedy shootout, bank raid and staged stunt bar brawl. Also see the real guns that won the west from our very own armoury collection.

Rocket & Flight Festival (22 - 23 June)

Build and fire your own air and water rockets, see Professor Nitrate’s curious contraptions that will launch, propel and send some these inventions whizzing through the sky. Witness a stunning scale model flying display of some of the most advanced radio controlled helicopters and planes.

Railway Weekend (6 - 7 July)

For a special behind the scenes Open Day, visit the Mills for the Railway Weekend where the volunteers will show off their collection of narrow gauge railway stock and reveal future plans for a working railway on the site.

Classic Vehicle Show (Sunday 14 July)

Experience the elegance and engineering of years gone by with the Classic Vehicle Show - a century of automated history brought to life.

Rocket Factory - Summer Holidays (20 July - 1 September)

Professor Nitrate moves out of his Mad Lab to join other mad scientists and create even more wild experiments – including outdoor science shows. The new Test Range allows visitors the unique opportunity to sample everything from archery to rail rocket cars and air cannons. In the Madlab – there will be lots of experiments around propulsion and some big bangs!

Medieval Weekend - August Bank Holiday (24 - 26 August)

Devoted to the ever popular medieval archery and falconry weekend, the Ye Olde Redtail Falconry Display will present an amazing birds of prey aerial display while Robin Hood and his Merry Men will be demonstrating their skills with the bow and arrow in a show-stopping archery display. The Middle Ages is also brought to life for younger visitors with craft activities, story-telling, and interactive games and quests.

Spooky Secret Island - Half Term (26 October- 1 November)

Halloween gets horribly spooky on the Secret Island during Autumn Half Term week when Dr Gore takes to the Mad Lab for a gruesome series of experiments.

Guy Fawkes Festival (2 - 3 November)

Where better to see a fireworks go off with a bang than in a Gunpowder Factory. The spectacular event features the gunpowder plot story, spooky craft activities and the hugely popular ‘Ghost of Guy Fawkes’ children’s play all culminating in a fabulous 15 minute fireworks display.
