The Railway group have at long last reached the end of the line-literally, with the installation of the buffer stops at the end of the Southern run round loop the trackwork is now complete. This will allow 100% efficiency when carrying passengers, trains must only be pulled. It is now hoped to give rides on Wednesdays during the Summer opening season. A small amount of ballasting is still required this has been delayed due to the digger giving problems and the need to construct a replacement ballast wagon.

The Portakabin has arrived thanks to Rye House power station and two volunteers who devised a method for its transportation. The roof has been replaced, the exterior and interior have been repaired and decorated. The group now boasts a roomy dining/kitchen area (with hot water) an office and a locker room. Whilst Naivettes (transport company) were on site, 2 Bicton carriages were moved to the concrete area opposite the main laboratory, these will be available to visitors as a sheltered picnic/waiting area. The Friends Association is carrying out the required repairs, the railway group are most grateful for their assistance.

The Baguly Drewry locomotive is to be named, after his death earlier this year, the railway group decided John H Bowles will be given a fitting tribute; John was a true gentleman, friend, railway stalwart and trustee. Contributions from the railways at WARGM have enabled the nameplates to be made, the naming will take place later this year when John’s family can attend.

Train rides were given at both the “end of term” party and the Friends Association AGM, both groups enjoyed the experience and were well behaved!

May the twenty third was volunteer day, and the railway were fortunate to have a group from Rye House power station visit. After sharing in various tasks a hearty barbeque was enjoyed by all, this was followed by a ride on both the land train and the railway.

An open day to recruit more guards and drivers had limited success, so if you feel you could play a part in this project please ring Liz Went (volunteer manager) or volunteer forms are available railway group.
