Education Officer (cover position)

The Royal Gunpowder Mills in Waltham Abbey is an important heritage site with a remarkable true story. We are committed to conserving and sharing its fascinating 300 year history with future generations by providing exciting and engaging educational programmes and family activities.

We are looking for a great communicator with a passion for teaching and learning and with strong organisational skills to join our teaching team to deliver engaging, interactive educational programmes, initially on a cover basis.

This is a flexible role as a cover teacher to support our existing team in meeting the demands of our busy programme. Full, paid training will be given. The role is an ideal opportunity for those looking for a career in heritage learning.

Job Purpose:

  • To provide direct teaching to school groups (both KS1 and KS2), and to work with groups of all ages and abilities.
  • To assist with training and to supervise other staff and volunteers.
  • To work as a team with other staff and volunteers.
  • To assist the Education Manager in the continual development and evaluation of the RGM Education Programme.
  • To ensure all materials and equipment, classrooms / teaching areas are safe, suitable and well-presented.
  • To take responsibility for designated areas of work – including maintaining a clean and tidy environment and reporting any issues to the line manager.
  • To work within Health and Safety Guidelines.

Person Specification:

Essential:

  • Experience of delivering a range of educational workshops to KS1 and KS2
  • Strong appreciation and knowledge of history, heritage and nature
  • Flexibility in terms of work patterns
  • Demonstrable ability to engage with children and young people of all abilities confidently and effectively
  • Ability to organize tasks and carry out duties without supervision and ability to delegate and supervise others when required
  • Strong team player able to work alongside a wide variety of people
  • Understanding of health and safety as it applies to carrying out tasks and keeping colleagues, volunteers and visitors safe
  • Good understanding of Safeguarding
  • First Aid qualification
  • Willingness to undergo training and professional development as required, including First Aid
  • An understanding of and commitment to equal opportunities in its widest sense and a commitment to inclusive education.

Desirable:

  • Qualifications relevant to the role (inc. NVQs / accredited training / professional qualifications) or equivalent experience
  • First Aid qualification

Pay: £10.82 per hour, plus holiday pay.

Hours are flexible, usually between 8.45 and 2.45 weekdays. Immediate start.

Site Services Assistant

This is a role for a versatile person with practical skills who likes working outdoors, and values heritage. 

We are a charity and our mission is to ensure that people have the best experience of the Royal Gunpowder Mills as visitors or volunteers. 

You will be supporting the conservation of the buildings, natural landscape and grounds by providing assistance to the Grounds Maintenance & Conservation, and the Heritage Buildings staff..  Duties include: Assisting with site repairs, litter and waste management, security management, grounds maintenance, heritage building care, nature conservation, and helping to supervise volunteers.

Your role also supports our Education and Visitor Services teams, by undertaking caretaking, cleaning, and preparing rooms for visitor activities. 

This is a role for a person who is keen to learn and develop new skills, and do the very best job possible.  You need to be a strong team player, accurate and methodical in your work, have practical maintenance experience and good DIY skills.  An excellent level of fitness is required.
