Making explosives is a dangerous business. The Royal Gunpowder Mills were engaged in that business for nearly 300 years and accidents do happen. This is the record of those accidents in which people lost their lives either in explosions or in the waterways which provided much of the early driving force for the Mills. The information comes not only from the official enquiries and inquests but from contemporary local and national newspaper reports and parish magazines.
About The Author
Richard Thomas lectures about the history of the Waltham Abbey Royal Gunpowder Mills and about the Gunpowder Plot. He has worked in the Archives at the Mills for ten years. In that time he became particularly interested in the various accidents and explosions that punctuated the manufacture of the sometimes unstable products that were made at Waltham Abbey. It was a natural progression to make a specialised study of those accidents. This book is a distillation of those studies.
