Group Visits

We offer an exciting range of activities - give us a call and arrange your group booking today!

We run group visits on weekdays all year round. If you require a weekend please get in touch with us to discuss.

Costs and Activities

Choose from a range of possible activities or make a day of it and choose them all!

  • £10.50 per person - Entry to the site, an introductory talk and access to our Film (15 mins), Main Exhibition and Rocket Vault - we can arrange an Armoury tour and access to our restored Powder Boat on request 

  • £3.00 per person - Add a Tractor Trailer Guided Tour of the out of bounds areas of our 170 acre site (approx 45 minutes)

  • £2.50 per person - Add tea, coffee and biscuits (to be booked in advance)

  • £1.50 per person - Add a trip on The Gunpowder Railway, a narrow gauge railway running roughly 1 km along the perimeter of the Royal Gunpowder Mills site (trip takes approx. 30 minutes - allow 40 minutes) (available on selected days only)

Getting here

The Royal Gunpowder Mills is situated just off the M25, and has free coach and car parking available on site.

Accessibility

The terrain of our visitor area is flat and wheelchair accessible (although some surfaces are uneven). 

Our Tractor Trailer seats around 20 people - one four-seat-bench can be removed to accommodate one wheelchair user per tour.

We have two wheelchair accessible toilets on site.

Lunch

We can provide you with a space to eat your packed lunches. If you'd like to order in lunch we can link you with a local caterer.

  • Name of group and main contact
  • Your top three preferred dates - in order of preference
  • Number of people 
  • Extra activities you would like to add - Tractor Trailer Guided Tour, Gunpowder Railway trip
  • Tea, coffee and biscuits? 
  • Would you like a lunch space?
  • Will you be ordering in lunch from one of our local caterers? 
  • Something about your group, e.g special interests, industry group, general interests...
  • Your plans for the rest of the day - are you fitting this visit with another stop off? 

Plan your day

All groups are different and so some wish to spend longer on site than others. All timings are for guidance only...

  • Introductory talk - 15 minutes
  • Film - 15 minutes (allow 25)
  • Exhibitions and outdoor visitor area - 30 minutes to 1 hour
  • Tractor Trailer Guided Tour - 45 minutes (allow one hour)
  • The Gunpowder Railway - trip takes approx. 30 minutes (allow 40 minutes)
  • Armoury Tour - 25 minutes

We are happy to adjust your visit so you get the most out of your time if you have a lunch appointment elsewhere.

    The purpose of the charity is to preserve, manage, research, conserve and display for the benefit of the general public and of the nation at large the historical and archaeological heritage of the Royal Gunpowder Mills, Waltham Abbey in the form of ancient monuments, listed buildings and the natural aspect features and bird, animal, tree and plant life.
